Copyright, Licensing & Permissions

AfroStrategy rules for citation, copyright, Creative Commons licensing, republication, translation and permissions.

Effective date: October 2026. Last reviewed: September 2026.

AfroStrategy supports responsible dissemination of African research while protecting authorship, attribution and publication integrity.

Ownership

Unless otherwise stated on the publication, copyright remains with the author, AfroStrategy or another identified rightsholder.

The license or copyright notice displayed on an individual publication takes priority where applicable.

Citation and linking

Readers may cite and link to AfroStrategy publications.

A good citation should include, where reasonably possible:

  • author;
  • publication title;
  • AfroStrategy;
  • publication date;
  • canonical URL; and
  • DOI where available.

Quotations

Reasonable quotation for research, teaching, criticism, commentary or other uses permitted by applicable law is generally welcome with appropriate attribution.

Republication and translation

Full republication, translation, substantial adaptation or commercial redistribution requires permission unless the publication is explicitly released under a license allowing the intended use.

Creative Commons

Some publications may be released under a Creative Commons license.

Where a publication uses CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, readers may share the unadapted work for non-commercial purposes with appropriate attribution but may not distribute modified versions.

The license displayed on the individual publication controls.

Commercial use

Commercial reuse requires written authorization unless expressly permitted by the publication’s license.

Images, figures and third-party material

Images, photographs, maps, datasets, charts and excerpts may have separate rights.

Permission from AfroStrategy does not automatically grant rights to third-party material.

Author rights

Unless another written agreement applies, authors retain copyright in their original work and grant AfroStrategy the non-exclusive rights reasonably necessary to edit, publish, archive, distribute, index, preserve and promote the accepted version.

Please identify the material, intended use, language, territory, format, expected audience and whether the use is commercial.
